Families & Children

The documents and articles posted below provide background information and historical context on issues related to families and children in all branches of the service, including issues related to DoD-funded travel for abortions across state lines, critical race theory (CRT) instructions in Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) schools, and pressures to provide transgender treatments and even surgeries for minor children of military parents. 

Abortion Travel

In October 2022, Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin unilaterally authorized generous time off and travel subsidies for “non-covered” abortions across state lines. Secretary Austin’s high-handed, unrestrained move violated the intent of laws barring the use of tax dollars for abortions.

Congress could have ended Sen. Tommy Tuberville’s months-long protest against Secretary Austin’s move by supporting the House provision that would have nullified his controversial memo.  Conferees, however, rejected the House measure.  Congress should resubmit and support that provision, especially since last year’s failure to act already is encouraging the Defense Department and Veterans Administration to impose even more progressive “reproductive health” policies beyond abortion, including the in vitro creation of babies with no biological ties to unmarried parents.
